The Benefits of Today’s Aerosol Packaging
In 1974, Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland and Dr. Mario Molina proposed that chlorofluorocarbons (or CFCs) deplete the stratospheric ozone layer. CFCs were used in many household items like refrigerators and air conditioning units. They were also used in aerosol cans as propellants. However, because of Rowland and Molina’s study, many American aerosol manufacturers switched from CFC propellants to more environmentally friendly alternatives. By 1978, the EPA banned CFC propellants, with the exception of some asthma inhalers, but those became CFC-free in 2008.
Today, aerosol products have made their way into many aspects of our lives, from food products to cosmetics. They are utilized in a wide variety of ways, from pest control to medical treatment. Aerosol cans have the unique ability to dispense an assortment of textures such as foams and mists making them great receptacles for almost any product.
Here are some other benefits of using products in aerosol packaging.
1. Safety
Aerosol cans are airtight, which means the product inside cannot leak or spill. This is especially good if you have a small child or a pet who might be intrigued by a strange spill on the floor. They are also tamper-resistant and tamper-evident. This is good because if an aerosol can has been tampered with, then the product inside may not be safe for consumption anymore.
2. Efficiency
Aerosol packaging is very efficient and easy to use. The valve system allows for the right amount of product to be applied from a safe distance. You can also apply a product in an aerosol can from any angle, even upside down. This is great for applying products to hard-to-reach places.
3. Sanitary
Since aerosol cans allow for products to be applied from a distance, the valve opening does not touch anything that is unsanitary. An entire family can use the same disinfecting spray and the medicine inside the can will not become contaminated.
4. Convenience
Aerosol cans are spill proof, which makes them great for travel. You can transport sun screen, bug spray, or your personal hygiene products and, no matter how much your bag gets thrown around, be assured that your clothes will remain safe from spills.
5. Cost-effective
Aerosol cans allow for up to 99% of a product to be emptied from the container. They also protect the product inside from oxygen which increases the shelf life. This means you get more bang for your buck and spend less money replacing half-full products that have expired.
