The Benefits of Bag on Valve Aerosol Packaging
Bag on valve (BOV) is an aerosol packaging system in which a bag is welded to the valve of the aerosol can.
The bag is shoved inside the can, and the product is filled into the bag and the propellant is filled into the space between the bag and the can. This technology allows for the complete separation of the product and the propellant.
This does create some limitations. For example, BOV cannot be used for any product that needs to be shaken before use. However, there are a lot of amazing benefits to using bag on valve aerosol technology.
Economic Benefits
With bag on valve technology, up to 99% of the product is emptied form the aerosol can, which means you’re getting to use everything you paid for. The separation of the propellant and the product means that the product does not need as many, if any, preservatives (depending on the product). Aerosol cans are air-tight, which greatly increases the shelf life of the product.
Usability Benefits
Traditional aerosol cans convenient, but BOV technology allows for the product to be dispensed from all angles, even upside down. Aerosol products can also be applied from a distance and without touching the spray nozzle opening, so they are extremely sanitary.
Environmental Benefits
CFCs were used in aerosol propellants and were harmful to the ozone, but have been banned in the U.S. since 1978. BOV aerosol cans use compressed air or nitrogen as a propellant, both of which are not harmful to the environment. Aerosol cans are also made from either aluminum or steel, which means they are recyclable. Read our blog post on how to recycle aerosol cans here.
Marketing Benefits
Since the propellant and product are separated, bag on valve technology can be used to dispense a variety of products and textures, from liquids to gels to foams. This means the same type of packaging can be used for a whole range of different products, increasing brand recognition.
